This is the trip for those just starting out in kayaking. A week with Kayak Peru is the perfect way to quickly take your skills to the next level. The lodge is surrounded by beautiful and safe class 2-3 whitewater and minutes from a hot springs that is perfect for roll practice. For this trip you should have some basic familiarity with kayaking including knowledge of the wet exit and the basic forward stroke.
Day 1: Kayak Peru staff will pick you up at the Cusco airport and transfer you to a local hotel. This day will be spent exploring the historic city of Cusco--the historic capital of Peru and a UNESCO world heritage site. There will be an orientation dinner in the evening and the night will spent at a hotel in downtown Cusco.
Day 2: Early in the morning we will travel to Cola de Mono. En route we will visit the Sacred Valley of the Inkas and enjoy views of the 5900 meter (19,000 foot) Mount Veronica. We will stop at the famous Santa Teresa hot springs for a quick soak and some roll practice. In the evening you will meet the local staff of Cola de Mono and get settled in to your treehouse accommodations.
Day 3: After a fresh breakfast of local food we will head to the Santa Maria section of the Urubamba where we will work on basic strokes/concepts and enjoy the scenery of the high jungle.
Day 4: Today we will travel to the rarely visited jungle town of Quillabamba--one of the most important agricultural centers in South America. Here the Urubamba flows through beautiful canyons in the cloud forest. On this day there will also be options to tour a coffee plantation or hike to some jungle waterfalls.
Day 5: Today we will paddle a short section of the lower Vilcabamba river. This tributary of the Urubamba has spectacular high-jungle scenery and will provide good practice in a lower-volume environment. After a short drive back to Cola de Mono we will relax in the wood fired hot tub and enjoy another fresh cooked meal at the lodge.
Day 6: A short drive from Cola de Mono is the classic Santa Maria section which is filled with fun wave trains and incomparable scenery. In the afternoon there will be time to explore Inca ruins and spend time in quaint town of Santa Teresa.
Day 7: For our last paddling day we’ll move upstream to some steeper and more challenging sections of the Urubamba. This section has warm water and safe rapids so it’s a perfect place to test the skills you’ve been working on all week.
Day 8: Today we’ll board the train to Aguas Calientes where we’ll tour Machu Picchu with a local guide. Machu Picchu is one of the world’s most stunning historical sites and one of the seven wonders of the world. In the afternoon we’ll board the train to Ollantaytambo where we’ll spend the night at a beautiful lodge on the shores of the upper Urubamba River.
Day 9: After a lazy morning exploring the historic town of Ollantaytambo the Kayak Peru staff will take you back to the Cusco airport or help you connect to other travels in Peru.
